New Comic Day: 7th August 2024

Good Morning Nerdy Birdies!

How are you today? How is your week going so far? Do you have anything planned for the weekend.

I am doing pretty well. I finally saw Deadpool and Wolverine yesterday, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m also looking forward to a chill weekend.

Today’s post is my weekly round up of all of the new releases I picked up from my local comic book store.

Let’s dive right in! I have a lot to share with you this week!

Wayne Family Adventures. Volume 5.

Wayne Family Adventures. Volume 5.

I’ve been really enjoying the collected editions of this adorable series. It’s nice to see the the Bat-Family in something more slice-of-life that explores their relationships with one-another.

Batman #151

Batman. Issue #151. Cover A.

Another Absolute Power Tie-In issue. Batman and Catwoman join forces to find a way of taking down Amanda Waller.

Batman #151.

Batman. Issue #151. Variant Cover by Mikel Janin.

I love Bruce’s resistance outfit, so I picked up this cover.

Batman #151.

Batman. Issue #151. Variant Cover by Olivier Coipel.

I laughed so hard when I saw this cover, so I had to pick it up. The swimsuit variants never disappoint.

Just look at Alfred’s face, it is the best thing about this cover.

Absolute Power #2.

Absolute Power. Issue #2. Cover A.

Jon Kent has been changed, and now he is going to face off against his own father. Can Clark break Jon out of it?

The Boy Wonder #4.

The Boy Wonder. Issue #4. Cover A.

Damian is back in the grasp of Ra’s and Talia al Ghul. Will he turn his back on everything the Batman, and his brothers, have been trying to teach him?

My Adventures with Superman #3

My Adventures with Superman. Issue #3.

Clark got himself, and Superman, arrested! He is still determned to help the Amazo robot, so it is up to Lois and Jimmy to break Superman out!

Gotham City Sirens #1.

Gotham City Sirens. Issue #1.

I am so excited to see these 3 girls back together again – what shenanigans will they get up to?

Batman & Robin. Volume 1: Father and Son.

Batman & Robin. Volume 1: Father and Son.

This collects the first 6 issues of Batman & Robin. Damian is learning to navigate his toughtest challenge ever – high school!

Nightwing: Year One (20th Anniversary Edition)

Nightwing: Year One (20th Anniversary Edition).

I am so excited to finally own this! One of my favourite Nightwing artists, Scott McDaniel, brings the story of how Nightwing came to be, to life.

This follows Dick Grayson’s journey from Robin, to the independent hero he was meant to be, including the origin of the Nightwing name.

Nightwing: Year One (20th Anniversary Edition)

Nightwing; Year One (20th Anniversary Edition). Dan Mora Direct Market Variant.

Of course I had to pick up the Dan Mora version as well. I simply adore this cover!

And that is it for this week’s haul! I hope that you enjoyed it! As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments as well as any recommendations for stuff you think I should read!

Red Hood: The Hill – My Thoughts

Good Morning Nerdy Birdies!

How are you today? How is your week going so far? I hope that your week goes exactly as you need it to.

I am doing pretty well. I had a relaxing weekend, and I got to visit one of my favourite stores on Saturday, which is always a delight.

Today’s post is going to be my thoughts on the recent comic book run, Red Hood: The Hill. This was a 6 issue mini-series with #0 issue to set things up.

Before I really get into it, I am going to say a couple of things. I am coming at this as a fan of Jason Todd/Red Hood. He is my favourite DC Comics character, so I just want you to understand my bias. This is also probably going to be a little bit on the rambly side, as I just want to share my thoughts now that this story is complete.

So let’s get into it, shall we?

Red Hood: The Hill – My Thoughts

Dan Mora Variant Cover – the best thing to come out of this run.

When I read that Red Hood was getting another self-titled story, I was really excited. Even if it was only going to be a 6 issue run. The last comic run that focused on Jason was Task Force Z, which I actually really enjoyed. There was that moment in Gotham War, but we don’t talk about that.

The first issue that was released was a collected re-release of Red Hood and the Outlaws #51 and #52, which were initially released at the end of 2020. These made up the last issues of RHATO from the Rebirth run.

This is my first issue with Red Hood: The Hill (which I will refer to as The Hill from this point onward) – this run is continuing a story that was initially released at the end of 2020. As of the start of The Hill, this was over 3 years ago. A lot of things have happened in the Batman universe, as well as the DC multiverse in general, since then, so going back to an event that references The Joker War feels a little bit weird.

Having said that, I may as well get to the main issue I have with The Hill. It doesn’t feel like it has a purpose. It also isn’t a Red Hood story, yes he is there, but it isn’t really about him, and that is my problem.

To explain why this is an issue for me, I am of the opinion that if you are going to name a story after a character, that character needs to be important to the story itself. For example, Nightwing could not exist without Nightwing. Batman could not exist without Batman. Red Hood: The Hill does not need Red Hood. This story could have unfolded in pretty much the same way if Jason hadn’t been there. He just did not feel vital to the story at all.

It really felt like this story was using Red Hood’s name to sell a story that was not at all focused on Red Hood, or even just Jason Todd. It was focused on the Watch, who are a vigilante group operating in the Hill, that Jason happens to become involved with. Jason didn’t not form this group, he isn’t training them, he just happens to be there. He just happens to want to help.

My other problem is that I don’t care about the rest of the characters featured in this comic book run. I don’t care about them as people, and I don’t care about the relationships they have with Jason, which only a couple of them really do. I just don’t know enough about these characters to really care. I feel as though this should have been it’s own story that focused on these characters alone, so that I might have been more invested in them; maybe have Jason come in a little bit later once we’ve established the characters of the Watch. I think the focus character should have been Dana, the vigilante known as Strike; and while she was the focus, I am reading a Red Hood comic, I want Red Hood to be the main character, not a character that I have spent no real time with, and have no investment in.

Next up is Jason’s character itself, and that is he just feels very bland. He is essentially pushed to the side in favour of Dana. I didn’t really get a feel for his motivation at all. I don’t even get the ‘I’m just here to annoy Bruce’ vibe. He just feels added in for the sake of having his name in the title. This ties back into the fact that this story was started 3 years ago, Jason has experienced several events since the end of RHATO that have had an effect on who he is as a person.

I would have understood it more if this had been pitched as more of a Lost Days type of thing, an “untold story of Jason Todd” so to speak. It wasn’t, so I have to take it as it is.

All in all, I’m just disappointed by Red Hood: The Hill. It feels like a cash grab because Jason is a popular character, and that just ended up doing him and the story a disservice.

I feel as though the writer had a story to tell, but they had to shoe-horn Jason into it, and it just didn’t work. Maybe with a longer run, I could have felt differently, but I have to go off of what we got. The story had potential, I just didn’t care, and I wasn’t given a reason to care beyond being a Jason Todd fan.

As far as I am concerned, nothing is more disappointing than wasted potential.

And that is it for this today’s post! I hope that you enjoyed it, and I hope that you can understand my points! As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments as well as any recommendations for stuff you think I should read!

New Comic Day – 31st July 2024

Good Morning Nerdy Birdies!

How are you feeling today? How has your week been going so far? Do you have any plans for the weekend?

I’m feeling OK today, and my week has been going pretty well so far. I have a lot of down time this weekend, so I am hoping to catch up on reading and sorting out my comics.

Today’s post is my weekly haul of all of the new releases I picked up from my local comic book store!

Let’s get right into it!

Absolute Power: Task Force VII #3

Absolute Power: Task Force VII. Issue #3. Cover A.

Another member of Waller’s Task Force VII is after the JSA. Will they fare any better than the former JLA members?

Red Hood: The Hill #6.

Red Hood: The Hill. Issue #6. Cover A.

This is it, the final issue of this mini-series. Will Red Hood and the Watch, with the help of Batman, be able to save the Hill? I guess we’ll find out.

Now that this series is finished, I want to sit and gather all my thoughts about it, then write a dedicated post with how I feel.

Super-Pets Special: Bitedentity Crisis.

Super-Pets Special: Bietdentity Crisis. One-Shot. Cover A.

I could’t resist this adorable looking summer special, especially as Bitewing, Nightwing’s beloved pooch, takes centre-stage.

What mischief will the Super-Pets get into?

Batman: Detective Comics – Gotham Nocturne: Overture

Batman: Detective Comics – Gotham Nocturne: Overture.

I’ve been waiting for this to come out, so I can read it all together.

And that is it for this week’s haul! I hope that you enjoyed it! As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments as well as any recommendations for stuff you think I should read!

New Comic Day – 24th July 2024

Good Morning Nerdy Birdies!

How are you today? Are you looking forward to the weekend? Do you have anything fun planned?

My apologies that this post is a day late, I was away from my computer all day yesterday, so I was unable to write this up.

I’m doing OK. I’m mostly hanging in there, but I have stuff to look forward to, so I am sure that will get me through!

Today’s post is my weekly round up of new releases I picked up from my local comic book store.

Let’s get into it, shall we?

Batman: The Brave and the Bold #15

Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Issue #15. Variant Cover by Dan Hipp.

Nightwing’s adventures with Deadman continue. (Isn’t is funny that these two are working together in two separate comic runs?) Booster Gold meets the Jurassic League, and Batman and Guy Gardner are trying to discover the secrets of the universe.

I really need to sit down and catch up with this series.

Absolute Power: Origins #1

Absolute Power: Origins. Issue #1. Cover A.

Go back to the beginning of Amanda Waller. Maybe we’ll discover the truth of her hatred and distrust for costumed heroes?

The real question is; can they make me sympathise with Waller at all?

Absolute Power: Task Force VII #2

Absolute Power: Task Force VII. Issue #2. Cover A.

Task Force VII continue their assault on the metahumans and costumed heroes of the world as they target Atlantis. Will Aquaman be able to stand up to the power threatening his home?

Green Arrow #14

Green Arrow. Issue #14. Cover A.

The Arrow Family come to terms with Ollie’s betrayal, and Roy takes his place as a leader. Also, Conner Hawke steps into his father’s mantle as Green Arrow!

As an extra added bonus, we get to see some good old interactions between Nightwing and Arsenal.

The Nice House by the Sea #1.

The Nice House by the Sea. Issue #1. Cover A.

The follow up to “The Nice House on the Lake” (which I still need to read).

What secrets await in this paradise? What horrors await under the promise of being saved from destruction? I guess we’ll have to find out.

I enjoy James Tynion IV’s writing, so I am curious to check out this series and see where is takes me.

And that is it for this week’s haul! I hope that you enjoyed it! As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments as well as any recommendations for stuff you think I should read!

New Comic Day: 17th July 2024

Good Morning Nerdy Birdies!

How are you today? How has your week been going? How has the weather been where you are.

I’ve been doing OK, I’m actively trying to sort through my backlog of graphic novels and catch up on my reading. Thankfully, it seems as though my TBR list is not as long as I had first thought!

Today’s post is my usual weekly rundown of the new comic book releases I picked up from my local shop.

Let’s jump right in, shall we?

Nightwing #116

Nightwing. Issue #116. Cover A.

The Fallen Grayson saga continues with Dick leaving Bludhaven to seek out Nanda Parbat and Deadman aka Boston Brand. Meanwhile, back in the city that Dick loves, someone else is taking up the mantle of Nightwing.

I love seeing Dick traveling with Haley in this one, and seeing her all grown up.

Nightwing #116.

Nightwing. Issue #116. Variant Cover by Rian Gonzales.

I can never resist a variant cover that has Red Hood on it, plus this one is just so cute!

Nightwing #116.

Nightwing. Issue #116. 1:25 Incentive Variant Cover by Tirso.

Another variant cover I just couldn’t resist. I love the Bludhaven vibe of this one, if you know what I mean.

John Constantine – Hellblazer: Dead in America #7

John Constantine – Hellblazer: Dead in America. Issue #7. Cover A.

I really need to catch up with this run, I’ve been behind since issue 4 I think. Maybe that will be what I do after work today…

Titans #13.

Titans. Issue #13. Cover A.

The Dark-Winged Queen’s plans continue, but it seems as though she may have more to deal with than just the Titans as a mysterious visitor shows up in Hell.

Plus, Beast Boy is beginning to get his groove back after the events of Beast World, while facing off against what could be his toughest opponent ever.

Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter #1

Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter. Issues #1. Cover A.

Dark Knights of Steel was the comic that got me back into comics, so I was really excited to hear that it would be getting a sequel, even if an indirect one.

This series follows Slade as he battles his way through the frozen kingdoms of the North. He starts working for Vandal Savage, but where he will end up, we can only wait and see.

I’m also a big fan of Jay Kristoff, so I’m excited to read more of this story he has written.

And that is it for this week’s haul! I hope that you enjoyed it! As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments as well as any recommendations for stuff you think I should read!

New Comic Day – 10th July 2024

Good Morning Nerdy Birdies!

How are you today? Do you have anything fun planned for the weekend? Watched anything good lately?

I’m doing pretty well. It’s going to take a while before it stops feeling weird that I have to go and pick up my comics on Wednesdays now. What can I say? I’m a creature of habit.

Today’s post is my weekly round up of new comic book releases that I picked up. Let’s dive right in.

As a note: I will be updating this post, as I was not able to pick up all of the comics that I ordered yesterday, so as soon as I get them, I will be adding them to this post!

Let’s dive right in to this week’s comics!

Batman & Robin #11.

Batman & Robin. Issue #11. Cover A.

After a tip from a friend, Batman and Robin have tracked down Bane, previously presumed dead, to Dinosaur Island, which he has claimed as his personal kingdom.

How will Damian react to seeing the man who killed Alfred in front of him? What other surprises await on an island full of dinosaurs?

Death in the Family: Robin Lives #1

Death in the Family: Robin Lives. Issue #1. Cover A.

We’re finally getting to see what might have happened had DC fans not voted to have Jason Todd killed off all of those years ago.

I’m looking forward to seeing where this little mini-series is going to go. Will Bruce be able to help Jason through the trauma inflicted upon him by the Clown Prince of Crime?

We also get a bit of a mystery – who shot the Joker?

Death in the Family: Robin Lives #1.

Death in the Family: Robin Lives. Issues #1. Variant Cover by Mike Mignola and Dave Stewart.

I’m a really big fan of Mike Mignola’s art style, especially in Hellboy, so of course I had to add this variant to my collection.

I can’t wait for Dan Mora’s variant cover next month!

And that is it for this week’s haul! I hope that you enjoyed it! As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments as well as any recommendations for stuff you think I should read!

New Comic Day – 25th June 2024

Good Morning Nerdy Birdies!

How are you doing today? How has your week been going so far? Have you got any fun summer plans?

I’m doing pretty well. I’m going on a trip soon that I am really looking forward to! It’s also my birthday next week!

Today, as per usual, I will be rounding up my weekly picks of DC Comics new releases. I only have a small number to share with you, so let’s get right into it!

Batman: The Brave and the Bold #14

Batman: The Brave and The Bold. Issue #14. Cover A.

Nightwing’s adventures with Boston Brand aka Deadman continue, and what is going on with Booster Gold?

I really need to catch up with this series – maybe that will be a job for this weekend.

Absolute Power: Ground Zero.

Absolute Power: Ground Zero. One-Shot. Foil Cover.

Absolute Power is almost here, and we’re getting things started with this establishing one-shot, before we get into the main event.

How will Waller’s plans affect the landscape of DC as this event progresses.

I have to admit, that I am excited about the things I have heard about Nightwing’s involvement in the event. I hope they do his character justice, and of course I’m looking forward to more amazing art by Dan Mora.

Batman/Catwoman: The Gotham War.

Batman/Catwoman: The Gotham War.

I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about this particular storyline, you can actually go and read about them here!

I’m giving it another chance though, maybe I will feel differently when I am able to read it all at once. I don’t have high hopes, but I’ll give it a try. At the very least, I get some very cool Red Hood panels out of it!

And that is it for this week’s haul! I hope that you enjoyed it! As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments as well as any recommendations for stuff you think I should read!

New Comic Day – 18th June 2024

Good Afternoon Nerdy Birdies!

How are you today? How is your week going? Do you have anything planned for the weekend?

My week is going pretty well so far. I don’t really have anything to complain about.

It’s time for another round up of the new DC Comics releases that I picked up for the week.

Let’s jump right into it!

Batman #149.

Batman. Issue #149. Cover A.

Dark Prisons has come to an end, and we are headed for Absolute Power.

All of the loose ends from Zur’s reign in the Failsafe body are being tied up. What will become of Bruce’s clone? What of Batman’s relationship with Vandal Savage, the Police Commissioner, and a new home for the Bat-Family?

Nightwing #115.

Nightwing. Issue #115. Cover A.

Fallen Grayson continues as we learn more about Heartless’s plans for Dick, and Nightwing. Will out hero learn to take that leap again by the end.

This one ends on a pretty good cliffhanger.

Nightwing #115.

Nightwing. Issue #115. Variant Cover by Dan Mora.

Of course I couldn’t resist the Dan Mora cover!

Titans #12.

Titans. Issue #12. Cover A.

The Titan’s deal with the threat that has invaded their home, and learn the truth of this misguided assassin.

The Dark-Winged Queen begins to reveal her plans for the Titans, leading to a surprise cliffhanger.

John Constantine – Hellblazer: Dead in America #6.

John Constantine – Hellblazer: Dead in America. Issue #6. Cover A.

I will admit that I have fallen behind with this one, but I hope to catch up with John’s spooky adventures through the United States soon.

And that is it for this week’s haul! I hope that you enjoyed it! As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments as well as any recommendations for stuff you think I should read!

New Comic Day – 11th June 2024

Good Morning Nerdy Birdies!

How are you today? How has your week been going?

My week has been pretty good so far. Just keeping up with day to day things, trying to keep myself busy, the usual kind of stuff.

As always, I’m here to share my weekly batch of new DC Comics releases that I picked up from my local comic book store.

Let’s jump right in!

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight – The Kryptonian Age #1.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight – The Kryptonian Age. Issue #1. Cover A.

I really enjoy Gotham by Gaslight – Jack the Ripper set within a Batman universe. Both the comic and the animated movie are pretty great; so naturally, I am really excited to be reading the sequel to that story!

Batman and Robin #10

Batman and Robin. Issue #10. Cover A.

The saga of the Man-Bat comes to an end!

I love Damian’s character in this run, especially his love for animals. His concern for the bats in this issue is really cute. I also appreciate a more wholesome Father/Son relationship between him and Bruce.

Red Hood: The Hill #5.

Red Hood: The Hill. Issue #5. Cover A.

Red Hood’s adventures in The Hill continue as he seeks to weed out the evil at work in his new home.

I will admit that I don’t care for this run very much, but I will see it through to the end. I just feel like this was more waster potential for Jason. If you want to focus on other characters, over the title character, maybe just write a comic run about them?

Red Hood: The Hill #5.

Red Hood: The Hill. Issue #5. Variant Cover by Dan Mora.

For as much as I don’t care for this run, it did give me this amazing art from Dan Mora, so there is a silver lining.

DC Pride: Uncovered.

DC Pride: Uncovered. Cover by Jen Bartel.

A collection of Pride covers throughout the years. I am a little disappointed that none of the Nightwing covers are in here, but it is still a really cute piece to have in my collection.

And that is it for this week’s haul! I hope that you enjoyed it! As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments as well as any recommendations for stuff you think I should read!
