New Comic Day – 11th June 2024

Good Morning Nerdy Birdies!

How are you today? How has your week been going?

My week has been pretty good so far. Just keeping up with day to day things, trying to keep myself busy, the usual kind of stuff.

As always, I’m here to share my weekly batch of new DC Comics releases that I picked up from my local comic book store.

Let’s jump right in!

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight – The Kryptonian Age #1.

Batman: Gotham by Gaslight – The Kryptonian Age. Issue #1. Cover A.

I really enjoy Gotham by Gaslight – Jack the Ripper set within a Batman universe. Both the comic and the animated movie are pretty great; so naturally, I am really excited to be reading the sequel to that story!

Batman and Robin #10

Batman and Robin. Issue #10. Cover A.

The saga of the Man-Bat comes to an end!

I love Damian’s character in this run, especially his love for animals. His concern for the bats in this issue is really cute. I also appreciate a more wholesome Father/Son relationship between him and Bruce.

Red Hood: The Hill #5.

Red Hood: The Hill. Issue #5. Cover A.

Red Hood’s adventures in The Hill continue as he seeks to weed out the evil at work in his new home.

I will admit that I don’t care for this run very much, but I will see it through to the end. I just feel like this was more waster potential for Jason. If you want to focus on other characters, over the title character, maybe just write a comic run about them?

Red Hood: The Hill #5.

Red Hood: The Hill. Issue #5. Variant Cover by Dan Mora.

For as much as I don’t care for this run, it did give me this amazing art from Dan Mora, so there is a silver lining.

DC Pride: Uncovered.

DC Pride: Uncovered. Cover by Jen Bartel.

A collection of Pride covers throughout the years. I am a little disappointed that none of the Nightwing covers are in here, but it is still a really cute piece to have in my collection.

And that is it for this week’s haul! I hope that you enjoyed it! As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments as well as any recommendations for stuff you think I should read!

New Comic Day – 4th June 2024

Good Morning Nerdy Birdies.

How are you? How has your week been going? Do you have anything fun planned for the weekend?

I’ve been away from a while, I’ve had some family stuff that I’ve been dealing with over the past couple of months. I’m back now, and I’m trying my best to get back into the swing of things.

Let’s do that by getting into the new releases from DC Comics that I picked up this week!

Batman #148.

Batman. Issue #148. Cover A.

As the cover suggests, it’s Batman vs Batman. Can Bruce finally overcome Zur-en-Arrh and pull his family together?

Who will be the Batman who walks away in the end?

This issue has been getting quite a lot of traction on social media after the previews were released. Reading it was definitely worth it though!

Boy Wonder #2.

Boy Wonder. Issue #2. Cover A.

The Story continues as Damian seeks out Red Hood to help him hunt down the demon. What will the 2 Robins learn about each other?

I am really enjoying this series so far, and I am excited to hopefully see all of the Robins work together! Also, Damian is just adorable in the art for this series.

My Adventures with Superman #1.

My Adventures with Superman. Issue #1. Cover A.

A tie-in comic that will act as a bridge between Season 1 and 2. I just hope that this isn’t referenced in Season 2, as I don’t think you should have to read a comic tie-in to understand a TV show.

Batman: Justice Buster #3.

Batman: Justice Buster. Volume 3.

I wasn’t sure what to think about this manga when it first released, but I have to admit that I have been really enjoying it. It’s a unique take on the core Batman story, and I’m curious to see where it will go.

And that is it for this week’s haul! I hope that you enjoyed it! As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments as well as any recommendations for stuff you think I should read!

New Comic Day – 9th April 2024

Good Morning Nerdy Birdies!

How are you today? How is your week going so far?

Did you get to see the eclipse on Monday? I sadly missed it due to cloud cover, though I did still get to experience the darkness.

My week has been going pretty well so far – I have functioning internet again, which is always exciting, and I finally feel like I am starting to get settled in my new home.

Today, as usual, I will be sharing the new comic releases that I picked up this week – let’s get right into it!

Batman/Dylan Dog #2

Batman/Dylan Dog. Issue #2. Cover A.

I really enjoyed the first volume of this crossover, so I am looking forward to seeing where this mini-series goes.

I want to look further into Dylan Dog thanks to this series, it’s always cool to expand my comic book experience.

Batman & Robin #8

Batman & Robin. Issue #8. Cover A.

Robin and Flatline’s adventure continues as they track down Flatline’s older sister. Batman meets up with Shush – but can she be trusted?

Red Hood: The Hill #3.

Red Hood: The Hill. Issue #3. Cover A.

I will admit that I am becoming a little frustrated with this series – but I will save that for a separate post.

The monsters are starting to come out of the woodwork now – how will Red Hood and the Watch handle this new challenge?

Red Hood: The Hill #3

Red Hood: The Hill. Issue #3. Variant Cover by Dan Mora.

I absolutely love Dan Mora’s art style, and I love his variant covers, so I am glad that he is going some for Jason.

X-Men ’97 #2

X-Men ’97. Issue #2. Cover A.

I’m just enjoying the nostalgia of this series.

And that is it for this week’s haul! I hope that you enjoyed it! As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments as well as any recommendations for stuff you think I should read!

New Comic Book Day – 12th March 2024

Good Morning Nerdy Birdies!

How are you today? How is your week going so far?

I move this week, so things are getting pretty hectic and stressful, but at least I have new comic book releases to get me through!

It’s time to share the comics I picked up from this week’s DC Comics release!

Let’s jump right in!

Batman & Robin #7

Batman & Robin. Issue #7. Cover A.

Flatline is back in Gotham! What kind of mischief will she and Damian be getting into?

Red Hood: The Hill #2

Red Hood: The Hill. Issue #2. Cover A.

The plot thickens in the Hill. The Watch is starting to come apart – can Red Hood help them operate as a team as he helps them protect his new home?

Red Hood: The Hill. Issue #2. Variant Cover by Riley Rossmo.

This isn’t my favourite variant cover, but I couldn’t resist for Red Hood.

Batman/Dylan Dog #1.

Batmna/Dylan Dog. Issue #1. Cover A.

I will admit that I picked this one up on a whim because of the cover. I don’t know much about Dylan Dog’s character, but I might look more into him if I enjoy this one.

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest. Volume 3.

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest. Volume 3.

I’ve been enjoying reading this series in graphic novel form. Here we get to see more of the Justice League, including Green Arrow, The Flash and Wonder Woman.

And that is it for this week’s haul! I hope that you enjoyed it! As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments as well as any recommendations for stuff you think I should read!

New Comic Day – 5th March 2024

Good Morning Nerdy Birdies!

How are you feeling today? Are you looking forward to the weekend? How has your March been so far?

(Can you believe that we’re in March already?)

My week has been pretty hectic, but moving house is pretty hectic – I am genuinely looking forward to be in a new space soon though, it is really exciting!

It’s that time of week again! Time to share the new releases I picked up from this week’s DC Comics releases. There is only one single issue comic this week, but some other fun stuff came out that I also picked up!

So let’s jump right in!

Batman #145

Batman. Issue #145. Cover A.

Now the Joker has finished telling Bruce his “origin” story it’s time to get back to what Failsafe is up to! And he’s reaching out to the Bat-Family!? How will Bruce be able to defeat the “perfect Batman” that he himself created? Well, he has to get out of prison first!

Batman Beyond: The Animated Series Classics Compendium

Batman Beyond: The Animated Series Classics Compendium.

I have been looking forward to the release of this book since it was announced. Terry McGinnis is in my Top 3 Batman characters and I’m really excited to be able to read the companion comics to the animated series!

Fun fact – this is the first time that some of these comics have ever been collected together. My only gripe is that I wish it was hardback!

Wayne Family Adventures: Volume 3

Wayne Family Adventures: Volume 3.

This is the start of Season 2 if you follow this series on the Webtoon app. This is also where the art style changed noticeably.

I love this series – mostly because it is a nice break from the more serious comic runs of DC Comics proper. I enjoy seeing the Bat Family in these slice of life situations, even if they do act a little but out of character sometimes.

Red Hood: Outlaws. Volume 1.

Red Hood: Outlaws. Volume 1.

I will be honest, I didn’t care for this series when I first read it, but I am willing to give it another go now that I can read it through, instead of an episode a week.

I won’t lie and say I’m not looking forward to the Jason solo parts though.

If you haven’t come across this before, and you’re not a fan of Jason and Artemis as a couple, then I’d skip this one.

And that is it for this week’s haul! I hope that you enjoyed it! As always, let me know your thoughts in the comments as well as any recommendations for stuff you think I should read!

Figure Collection: Red Hood Unmasked by McFarlane Toys (Gold Label)

Good Morning Nerdy Birdies!

How are you doing today? How was your weekend?

My weekend was pretty chill, I went on a visit to a local Museum, which will be featured on my Photography Blog pretty soon!

I also got a new addition to my figure collection over the weekend, so that will be the subject of today’s post!

A little bit of backstory: I’m trying to piece together all of the Red Hood/Jason Todd figures from McFarlane Toys, so I was really excited when I came across one of the figures that I needed on Mercari.

New 52: Red Hood Unmasked (Gold Label) by McFarlane Toys

This figure was shipped to me inside the box, so I’ll start by sharing the photos of him inside the box.

Below are the specs on this figure, from the McFarlane Toys website.

Release Date: 2021
Scale: 7″
Brand: DC Multiverse

  • Designed with Ultra Articulation with up to 22 moving parts for full range of posing and play
  • Red Hood is featured unmasked and is based on his look in the New 52 Comics
  • Red Hood includes the All-Blades, a crowbar, and a base
  • Included collectable art card with Red Hood figure photography on the front, and character biography on the back

I think my favourite detail about this figure is that he comes with the All-Blades, one of his primary weapons in his Red Hood and the Outlaws New 52 comic run.

Of course, I took him out of hos box to display him on the shelf with the rest of my collection.

Red Hood Unmasked – Out of Box

I displayed him holding the flaming All-Blade.

This figure suffers from the same issue that is my major complaint about McFarlane figures, and that is that he is only attached to the base by a single peg. The figure has a hole in each heel for the display, but the base on has one peg. This makes the figure unstable as he is on the top-heavy side.

With that being said, I am happy to have another figure that is Red Hood without the helmet.

My last photo is just going to be a close up on his face and chest.

Red Hood Unmasked: Detail View

I really like how bold the Red Hood symbol is against the black of his uniform.

Overall, I am happy to have this in my collection, he’s definitely one of my favourite pieces.

Would anyone be interested in seeing all of my Red Hood collection together? I have something coming in that I am really excited about – I can’t wait to share it with all of you!

And that is it for today’s post! I hope that you enjoyed it!

New Comic Day – 13th February 2024

13th February 2024

Hello my Nerdy Birdies!

How are you all doing today? I hope that the week has been treating you well so far!

I’m having a decent week so far! I traveled to Katsucon today, which has left me feeling pretty tired, but that’s OK! I’m looking forward to some nerdy fun!

Speaking of nerdy fun, I picked up my new comics from DC yesterday, and it’s time for me to share what I picked up!

Let’s get right into it, shall we?

Batman #143

Batman. Issue #143. Cover A.

Part 2 of Joker: Year One. I’m still pretty confused by this story so far, it feels a bit disjointed, though I suppose that makes sense for the Joker.

It is interesting seeing the Joker go through the same training as Bruce, with a very different outcome!

Batman & Robin #6

Batman & Robin. Issue #6. Cover A.

I’m really enjoying this series, mostly because it is showing Damian as a normal kid, or at least in normal kid situations. I really feel for him being bullied just because he is different.

I’m also glad to see some cute Father/Son moments between him and Bruce.

Red Hood: The Hill #1.

Red Hood: The Hill. Issue #1. Cover A.

I’m excited to see Jason get his own mini-series, especially as this picks up at the end of his RHATO Rebirth run.

I’m really hoping for no romantic storyline for him, and just some good (or any) character development.

Red Hood: The Hill #1.

Red Hood: The Hill. Issue #1. Variant Cover by Tirso Cons.

Of course, I will be collecting all of the variant covers for this series.

Justice League: Death Metal

Justice League: Death Metal.

The latest addition to my graphic novel library! I will admit that I picked this up for Dick Grayson with his ponytail, but I am excited to read it!

And that is it for this week’s comic roundup! Did you see anything that you’re reading, or you’d be interested in reading! Let me know if you have any suggestions, I’m always open to reading new things!

I hope that you enjoyed this post!

New Comic Day – 6th February 2024

New Comic Day

Good Morning Nerdy Birdies!

How are you doing today? I hope that the week has been treating you well so far. Are you looking forward to the weekend?

My week has been going pretty well so far. I am still getting a new pet settled in at my home, which has been an adventure.

As it is Wednesday, it’s time to round up the comic books that I picked up on release day for DC Comics. This week is another small haul, but I am really excited about it!

Let’s jump right into it, shall we?

Batman #142

Batman. Issue #142. Cover A.

Joker: Year One is here. Will we finally learn the true origin of the Clown Prince of Crime? Can we trust one of the most unreliable narrators of all time?

Red Hood: The Hill #0

Red Hood: The Hill. Issue #0. Cover A.

To prepare for Jason Todd’s new mini-series (issue #1 is releasing next week), DC released the last 2 issues of the Red Hood Rebirth run to provide the setup for Red Hood’s next adventure.

As Red Hood is my favourite comic book character, I am excited to read something new for him. I will keep my fingers crossed that this next chapter treats the character well, and we can actually see something new for him.

Batman: Justice Buster #2.

Batman: Justice Buster. Volume 2.

I am usually hesitant when it comes to Manga based upon characters from western comics, so I did not expect to enjoy the first volume of this as much as I did.

The release of this surprised me, I hadn’t been looking for it, but I am really looking forward to reading it, and seeing how this futuristic Batman meets, and deals with Superman.

And that is all for this week’s little comic haul! I hope that you enjoyed. Did you see anything that you’re going to be reading? As always, I am always open to recommendations of what you think I should be reading!

Falling Down a Rabbit Hole: 20cm Plush Dolls (15cm too!)

Hello Nerdy Birdies!

How are you doing today?

In today’s post, I am going to be sharing the latest rabbit hole that I have been finding myself going down recently; and it is these adorable 20cm plush dolls!

I originally saw these guys floating around on Tumblr and Twitter, and didn’t really think anything of them – that is, until I joined Mecari and found someone selling two of these dolls of Dick Grayson, or Nightwing, from the Bat-Family. Well, one of these is 20cm and the other is 15cm. They are pictured below.

Dick Grayson: 20cm (#1) and 15cm (#2)

Little did I know that these two would be my White Rabbit, and would be the start of my inevitable descent down the rabbit hole. Of course, as soon as I realized that there was a doll of Dick, there was most likely going to be a doll of Jason Todd.

As such, my quest began.

As a quick aside, all of these dolls arrived without clothes. All of the outfits came from Amazon.

These two dolls were honestly the only ones I could find for the longest time. It seemed as though every time a doll of Jason become available, it was snatched up just as quickly. So, one day I was window shopping Mercari, and I came across a doll that I thought looked similar enough to Jason. So I picked him up, as it seemed to me at the time that I was not going to be able to find an actual doll of Jason Todd.

Below is the doll I picked up – the 3rd in my collection.

Unknown (20cm): Stand in for Jason Todd

I do not know who this is actually supposed to be a plush doll of, as his description was very vague, and he doesn’t have any kind of identifying marks (I will talk more about this in a little bit.)

Shortly after finding the doll pictured above, I found my (first) plush doll of Jason Todd. I think I found him within a week, maybe a little more. Not only did I find Jason, I also found my last plush doll of Dick Grayson. They are both pictured below:

Jason Todd #1 (20cm)
Dick Grayson #3 (20cm)

I love how each of the dolls have a slightly different expression, and their faces are done in slightly different styles. The Dick Grayson doll pictured above is the only doll I have that has a skeleton.

What is a plush doll skeleton?

A skeleton is a wire frame inside of the plush doll that allows them to be posed, and makes them a little bit sturdier.

Like an avalanche, it started small and then snowballed. Of course, I had found one Jason Todd, so I found another, and another in quick succession. I found 3 Jason dolls in the space of maybe 4 weeks. All on Mercari. Jason doll #2 is another 20cm doll and Jason #3 is a 15cm doll. They are pictured below:

Jason Todd #2 (20cm)
Jason Todd #3 (15cm)

And that brings me to an end of my doll collection… for now.

One of my favourite little detail about some of these dolls is the little identifying marks that some of them have on their chest. I think of them kind of like cutie marks from My Little Pony.

Jason Todd doll with Red Hood symbol on his chest.

You can see an example of these marks in the photo above. I just think they’re a neat little detail. I have seen lots of variety in these while browsing though images. The Bat- Family emblems are my favourite though.

That brings me to the end of this post. I hope that you enjoyed it – though it does bring me to a question – do you have an rabbit holes that you’ve gone down that you just were not expecting? I’d love to hear all about it!

Batman/Catwoman: The Gotham War – My Thoughts (A Rant, I suppose.)

Hello Nerdy Birdies!

How are you doing today? I hope that the week is treating you well so far.

Today I’m going to be sharing my thoughts on the latest event to occur in DC Comics, which is the Gotham War saga between Batman and Catwoman.

This will hopefully give me the push I need to talk about comics more often, sharing my opinions on storylines and what not.

This post won’t be a review so to speak, and will follow more of a stream of consciousness style as I go through my thoughts and feelings regarding this event. So I am sorry if this comes off disjointed or choppy. I will do my best to keep it coherent.

Please note that I am writing this after the release of Batman #139, which is the issue following the events of Gotham War, setting up the ‘Mind Bomb’ storyline. Any suggestions I make are also based on my opinion and interpretation of Gotham War.

I suppose I will start with my expectations going in. I’ll admit that I was mostly intrigued with this event because of Jason Todd/Red Hood’s involvement, more so than any strife between Batman (who I will be calling Bruce from this point on) and Catwoman (who I will be referring to as Selina). As Jason is my favourite character in DC media, and his inclusion was important enough for him to have his own single issue comics; that was enough to get me invested in the story from the beginning. That was my ‘hook’ to read the storyline, so to speak.

Having said that though, I was definitely interested by the idea of Bruce and Selina facing off, at least from an ideological standpoint. What would happen if they were unable to compromise, or reconcile, the difference in how they think? I went into Gotham War thinking that this is what it was going to be. Bruce and Selina fighting over Gotham, and the nature of crime in the city.

As I read Gotham War, I wish that this was the premise that they had stuck with – two people who care for each other deeply, but have very different world-views, coming to blows and then having to compromise when the conflict threatens everything. It’s a simple premise, but between Selina and Bruce specifically, I think it could have been something really special, with both of them emerging as people changed.

I even like the inclusion of Jason in this premise, he’s definitely the wild-card of the Bat-Family, able to instigate things between the pair, and maybe being the one to help them find the compromise that ends the conflict.

Sadly, that isn’t what we got.

Getting into the actual events of Gotham War, I’ll start with the inclusion of Vandal Savage. I don’t hate Vandal as a character, I just don’t think he was needed as an antagonist here. I understand that he still has role to play in future storylines (as per the ending of Gotham War and the beginning of ‘Mind Bomb’ in Batman #139), but I feel as though that could have been developed separately from Gotham War.

For example, he could have taken control of Selina’s collection of Cat Burglars after the events of Gotham War had concluded. Everything with finding the meteor shards could have happened afterward, including Selina falling into the Lazarus Pit crater with Vandal. I just think that moment would have been more bittersweet if she and Bruce had found common ground in the aftermath of the War, if they were on the same page again.

I think everything I say is going to come back to one major point, there was a lot of potential in a conflict between Batman and Catwoman, but I feel as though the writers of this event lost focus on that conflict to include other things that didn’t need to be there. As far as I am concerned, the Gotham War should have only been about the ideological differences between Bruce and Selina, and how their feelings for each other complicates the matter even further.

I suppose next I will talk about the schism of the Bat-Family.

Again, I feel as though this aspect of the Gotham War had a lot of potential; unlike the core conflict however, I do think that this lived up to its potential a little bit more.

I like that most of the Bat-Family decides to stay neutral, at least in the beginning, as this genuinely strikes me as the action that most of them would take. The exceptions of course being Damian, who is Bruce’s son through and through, and Jason, who can use the situation to antagonise Bruce. The rest of them though, I think they would be able to see things from both sides and would only interject if something serious happened that would tip the scales.

As far as Jason goes, I do think he agrees with Selina for the most part, but I also think that he sides more with her to get Bruce’s goat. I have a whole separate post I want to make in regards to Bruce and Jason’s relationship, and my thoughts on it.

I suppose that brings us to the elephant in the room, and that is the actions that Bruce takes against Jason specifically. Not only does he kidnap Jason, and hold him against his will, he chemically changes his body, so that any time Jason experiences heightened adrenaline, his body will respond with a fear response. Bruce’s reasoning is that this will stop Jason from being Red Hood and will essentially force him to live a ‘normal’ life.

This entire decision on Bruce’s part is honestly just stupid, on top of being wrong. If you can’t understand just why it is so wrong, then I don’t know what to tell you.

And this is not a justification on Red Hood’s illegal actions; if you want him to be held accountable, then hold him accountable – this isn’t that. This isn’t punishing him for crimes he has committed. This is fundamentally changing someone against their will. In doing so, Bruce robs himself of any moral standing him, and his arguments, may have had. It also destroys and modicum of trust he and Jason may have had, as well as jeopardizes the trust that the rest of the Family have in him.

You can see this in what occurs between Bruce and Dick.

If I try and see it from the writer’s point of view, I can kind of understand that this is a drastic action for Bruce to take, and with Zur lurking in the background, is this a hint that he is more compromised than he thinks? To me though, it just reads as Bruce making irresponsible decisions and expecting everyone to go along with it, without him having to explain himself in any way.

As this post has gone on for quite a while, I also don’t really care for the involvement of the Joker at the end, though I do find it interesting that this goes on to tie in with The Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing. I just think the Joker is an overplayed element now – but that’s just my personal opinion, coming from someone who has enjoyed The Man Who Stopped Laughing.

TL;DR – I went into this storyline/event with hope for the potential that the conflict at it’s core had – though as I read more and more, the disappointment was just compounded for a multitude of different reasons. I’m tired of Bruce being abusive towards the people that he claims to live – this way of writing his character has just gotten old. I do prefer him in the gray area, in a lot of ways, but not when it comes to that. And yes, I do think what he did to Jason was abusive, his intentions and reasoning does not matter.

I’m sad that this story didn’t stay focused on the characters in it’s title, and for me it was just a flop.

I did however, have a couple of good moments with the art and story, such as Bruce and Jason bantering with each other; and the Bat-Siblings trying to be there for each other.

Despite all that I had to complain about, I am looking forward to ‘Mind Bomb’ and seeing how it ties together the Gotham War and The Man Who Stopped Laughing. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for something interesting happening between Zur and the Joker, and that Bruce can somehow reconcile with his family.

And that’s it for this lengthy post. Honestly I just had a lot of thoughts about Gotham War and I needed to get them out. What were your thoughts on Gotham War – did you enjoy it? Did you hate it? Did you skip over it? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
